Samsung Health alternative: CalQuest vs Samsung Health food logging

The quick answer

CalQuest is a Samsung Health alternative for the food-diary part of your routine, with editable photo calorie and macro estimates and quests on iPhone and Android. It has limited free daily scan energy, ads and optional PRO. Samsung Health also tracks nutrition within a broader activity, sleep and wearable platform, and its privacy notice describes Scan Meal. CalQuest does not replace that wider system or promise automatic data transfer.

A food log is one part of Samsung Health

Samsung Health brings activity, sleep, nutrition and other wellness information together, with supported Galaxy devices adding further measurements. Its food tracker records calorie and nutrient intake. For someone already using a watch, the attraction may be the connected overview rather than the food entry screen alone.

CalQuest is a more focused calorie and macro diary with quests, XP, streaks and monthly leagues. It may be an alternative for recording meals, but it is not a replacement for sleep tracking, workout records or wearable measurements. Separate those jobs before deciding whether a different diary would help.

Samsung also documents meal-photo analysis

Samsung's current privacy notice describes Scan Meal: food photos are analysed with AI to estimate calories and nutrients and saved to meal records. Its 13 October 2026 announcement identifies an initial US beta for users aged 19 and older on selected Galaxy models. Check Samsung's device list and rollout details; this is not universal photo access. It would be misleading to say Samsung Health has no photo capability.

The practical reason to trial CalQuest is therefore its own logging and game experience. If meal capture already works well in your Samsung Health setup, you may prefer to keep your food and activity information together. CalQuest does not promise automatic syncing with Samsung Health or conversion of its existing food history.

Try lunch without disturbing the watch routine

Imagine your watch has recorded a morning walk and you are about to eat a rice bowl. Those are separate events: calories burned during activity are not the same measurement as calories eaten. A food-diary trial should not require recreating the walk or assuming the two systems exchange data.

For the meal in CalQuest, photograph the bowl, mention an oily sauce or ingredients beneath the topping, and review the estimated portion and macros. Save after corrections and look at the daily quests. For repeat foods, try Recent/Favourites. This is a practical example, not proof that CalQuest estimates a meal better than Samsung Health.

A checklist for trying another food diary

CalQuest works on iPhone and Android, supports manual entry and has no barcode or nutrition-label scanner. Free scan energy refills daily with limits. There are ads and optional PRO for unlimited scans, subject to fair use. Check whether that diary fits while keeping any broader health records you need.

  1. Identify the part you want to change: food entry, meal review or motivation.
  2. Keep activity, sleep and wearable records in the service that already holds them.
  3. Try one ordinary meal photo and one known food entered manually.
  4. Check scan allowance and ads, and avoid assuming Samsung Health sync or history import.
  5. Decide whether maintaining a separate diary is convenient enough for everyday use.
