The quick answer

CalQuest is a Cal AI alternative if you want free photo scans each day and a game layer that brings you back to your food log. Free scan energy is limited, and optional PRO removes the energy wait. Cal AI offers barcode and nutrition-label scanning, which CalQuest does not currently support.

CalQuest vs Cal AI at a glance

Both apps use a meal photo to estimate calories and macros. The differences that matter here are free scan access, the tools available for packaged foods and the reasons each app gives you to return. These are feature comparisons, not measured accuracy results.

Where Cal AI does more

Cal AI offers barcode and nutrition-label scanning. CalQuest does not currently offer either tool: you can log food from a meal photo, manual entry, Recent foods or Favourites. If packaged food with a barcode makes up most of your food log, that difference matters.

Cal AI is free to download, but its App Store description says food scanning analysis results require a subscription. Check the current offer in your store before subscribing, since prices and trial availability can change.

What CalQuest adds

Free scan energy refills each day. If you run out, you can wait for a refill or use available extra-scan options, such as watching a rewarded ad or spending in-app diamonds. CalQuest has ads and an optional PRO subscription. Free scans are limited.

Meals and healthy actions complete daily quests and earn XP. Your streak grows for each day you open the app, and your XP ranks you in a monthly league. Finish in a promotion place to move up for the next month.

You stay in control of your food log. Review and edit the food, serving, calories and macros after a scan. Add a note about something the photo cannot show, such as food fried in butter or a sauce added before serving.

Compare the workflow on your usual meals

Try a mixed lunch and a packaged snack before changing your routine. For example, a rice bowl may need a note about sauce or cooking oil, while a labelled yoghurt gives you a serving and nutrition panel to check against. These are example tasks, not results from a test we have run.

In CalQuest, review the bowl's food names, portions and macros before saving. For the yoghurt, enter the known information manually because CalQuest has no barcode or label scanner. Decide whether that extra work matters more to you than the free daily scan allowance and quests.

  1. List the Cal AI tools you use, especially barcode scanning, label scanning and saved food records.
  2. Try CalQuest with one new meal and review the result before saving it. Check the scan energy available on your account.
  3. Keep access to your old records while you decide. Trying CalQuest does not promise a transfer of your Cal AI history.
  4. Check any existing subscription separately through the service or store that bills you.

Which one should you pick?

Consider Cal AI if barcode and nutrition-label tools matter most to you. Consider CalQuest if you want free scans each day and like the idea of quests, streaks and a league bringing you back tomorrow.

Neither a feature list nor a meal photo proves which app gives a better estimate. We have not tested the two side by side. Review the identified foods, portions and nutrition details, especially when ingredients such as oil are hidden from the camera.
